medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (5. November) is the feast day of:
Elizabeth and Zechariah (1st cent.) Elizabeth and Zechariah appear
in Luke's gospel as the parents of John the Baptist. Zechariah was a
priest; Elizabeth was a kinswoman of the Virgin Mary. They were
childless until the archangel Gabriel told Z. that they would give
birth to John. John acknowledged Jesus prenatally when Mary came to
visit Elizabeth. That's it for scriptures. Several church fathers
attest that Z. was martyred.
Bertilla (d. c. 705) Bertilla was born in the region of Soissons.
She was sent to Jouarre to be a nun, and was later chosen to lead a
group of nuns to the new convent of Chelles. She served as abbess 46
years.
