medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (14. October) is the feast day of:
Callistus I (d. 222) Callistus (Calixtus) was a freed slave, made a
deacon by Pope Zephyrinus, and elected to the pontificate himself in
c. 217. He may have been martyred, perhaps by a mob. C's tomb was
discovered in 1960, complete with 6th-century frescoes of his
martyrdom.
Justus of Lyons (d. c. 390) Justus was a deacon at Vienne before
becoming bishop of Lyons. His specialty was discipline. He doesn't
seem to have liked being a bishop much; after the Council of Aquileia
in 381, instead of returning home, he just kept going to Egypt, where
he joined a monastery. He seems to have been persuaded to return to
his duties, though (traditions disagree on this point).
Angadrisma (d. c. 695) Angadrisma was a woman of the diocese of
Therouanne who became a nun against her family's wishes. To avoid
marriage, A. prayed to become physically repulsive---God obligingly
struck her down with leprosy. Her would-be husband married someone
else and A. took the veil---upon which God even more obligingly
healed her. A. ended up as abbess of a convent near Beauvais.
