medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (12. October) is the feast day of:
Felix, Cyprian, and Many Others (as my book puts it so grandly) (d.
c. 484) Today the martyrs of the Vandal persecution in North Africa
are commemorated. Accounts say that 4,966 catholic Christians of all
sorts were gathered and martyred. Felix and Cyprian were bishops.
Edwin (d. 633) Edwin became king of Northumbria in 616. He
eventually converted to Christianity in 627 and became an active
promoter of the new religion. He was eventually killed in battle by
the forces of King Penda; since Penda was not a Christian, E. was
regarded as a martyr.
Wilfrid (d. 709) The Northumbrian Wilfrid went off to Rome at a
young age and on his return to England became the great champion of
Roman practices against the Irish. He served as abbot of Ripon, won
the debate at the synod of Whitby, and soon became a bishop
(wandering off to Francia for so long that a new bishop was appointed
in his place). W. and Theodore of Canterbury got in a dispute over
jurisdiction; Theo deposed W., but W. appealed to the pope and was
reinstated---when W. returned to England, the king wasn't amused and
put him in prison for 9 months before kicking him out of the kingdom
again.
