We are delighted to announce that the final conference programme has now
been published online at www.talis.com Talis Insight ’05 is a unique
event, which brings together a host of thought leaders to challenge and
debate the UK agenda for public and academic libraries.
Join us at Talis Insight ’05 and enjoy inspirational keynote sessions
including:
“Riding the Digital Wave”
Mike Lloyd, Microsoft UK Higher Education
How are leading software companies harnessing the opportunities and meeting
the challenges of the digital world? Microsoft will provide an insight in
to how Information and Communication Technology can extend the traditional
boundaries of teaching and deliver a personalised and enriched learning
experience for students – servicing the growing expectations of the user.
“The Technology behind the European Library”
Bill Oldroyd, The British Library
This session will present an overview of The European Library, exploring
the purpose, origins, current and prospective partners and the future plans
of TEL. Bill Oldroyd will discuss the virtual portal, exploring the
details of the overall architecture, SRU, the use of SRU/Z39.50 gateways,
how the browser runs the portal, and more specifically – the issues
associated with this approach. This session will close with a discussion on
the longer term implications of this approach, with some examples of where
this approach may be leading.
“Evolution or Revolution? Embracing the Procurement Challenge”
Andrew Stevens, MLA & Paul Dalton, Askews
What are the procurement challenges facing libraries? What does the PKF and
Gershon review recommend and how does this pave the way for new procurement
models? What supply chain efficiencies do Askews believe libraries can
really achieve? How does Talis Gateway allow libraries to achieve Gershon
targets? This session will demonstrate how libraries can achieve greater
efficiencies through collaboration and technological integration.
“BT – Delivering a 21st Century Network”
John Parkinson, British Telecom
Technology is increasingly becoming part of the fabric of people’s everyday
lives, enabling them to communicate, to do business, to shop, to play.
Supported by broadband, the internet is continuing to grow, and permeates
business and the home. Most people now have mobile phones, and are
starting to use sophisticated new services. What’s more, these ways of
using technology are starting to come together. To converge. So, in the not
too distant future, the descendants of today’s phones will be powerful
computers, as well as phones and video terminals. Broadband connected PCs
will support phone calls over the internet. Customers will have more
services, which will be more flexible and more customised than ever before.
All this depends on telecommunications – and provides huge challenges to
companies like BT. John Parkinson will present on the diverse challenges
that are being addressed by the 21st century network (21CN) – BT’s radical
and visionary programme to build the infrastructure to support this
revolution.
“Men Plan; God Laughs. Some Random thoughts on the Future of the
Universities”
Professor Peter Knight. The University of Central England.
“Mashing up TIC ‘05 - what have we learned, what does it mean, and where do
we go next?”
Paul Miller, Technology Evangelist, Talis
To borrow terminology from the Web 2.0 community featured in earlier TIC
sessions, Paul Miller will create a Mash Up that draws out the key messages
from two days of presentation and discussion. Paul Miller aims to place the
whole within the wider contexts of organisational reality and entirely
achievable aspiration. Do we have the collective will to move,
collaboratively, beyond that which we must do to engage with that which we
can and should?
