EARTHSCOPE WORKSHOP:
INTEGRATED GEOLOGIC FRAMEWORK FOR EARTHSCOPE'S USARRAY
Friday-Sunday, February 3-5, 2006; St. Louis, Missouri.
An NSF-sponsored workshop will be held on February 3-5, 2006, to discuss
to the development of a nationwide geologic framework for the USArray
component of the EarthScope initiative. The meeting, which starts on
Friday evening and finishes at Sunday noon, will be held at the
Renaissance St. Louis Airport hotel in St. Louis, Missouri.
The workshop will focus on these related issues:
1) To develop integrated continental science experiments (Traverses,
Corridors or seismic grids), and how to do this (one or two long segments,
or multiple shorter segments).
2) To pool the knowledge and experiences from regional workshops into a
national EarthScope research agenda, particularly focusing on the
transitions between geological provinces.
3) To insert a regional geochronology component into USArray.
4) To discuss the potential role of active seismic studies for
providing detailed crustal information.
The goals of the workshop are to determine how to:
1) Fully integrate geology into EarthScope’s USArray component.
2) Distribute geologic investigations throughout the United States.
3) Develop a geochronology campaign in support of USArray data
acquisition.
4) Transform the scientific approach of the geologic community from PI-
driven to national projects.
5) Optimize the potential for education and outreach through an
integrated geologic component and linkages with natural exhibits (Parks
and Monuments).
6) Provide a synoptic view of North American geology in order to
understand the structure and evolution of continents.
To apply, send a single-page statement to Ben van der Pluijm
([log in to unmask]) by November 15, 2005. Please include your
background, position, discipline(s) within the Earth Sciences, research
interests, US areas of interests and reason to participate. In addition
to university researchers, we also accept applications from senior
graduate students working on US geology topics. We will cover the costs
of housing, food and a contribution toward your travel. Additional
