medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Images of the Marriage of the Virgin from the 14th and 15th centuries are often set
in front of church doors. Here is an example by Bernardo Daddi, which shows the
front of the church festooned with fabric hangings and quite a crowd gathered
around:

And Robert Campin's highly symbolic version has Ecclesia in process of replacing
the Temple:

(sorry, I can't do tiny url's yet). It is equally clear, however, that not all such scenes
were set before church doors, and considerable variety exists in the locations of the
Virgin's Marriage, which seems to reflect the diversity reflected in this string.
As for peasant weddings, Pieter Breughel the Elder painted several panels of
peasant wedding feasts:

which, of course, actually followed the wedding itself and have nothing to do with
churches, but they certainly seem to have been well and enthusiastically attended.
