medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
> Winchester Cathedral sits (in part) over a well. Whether it was a "shrine" of a local cult is unclear.
Tom,
This is such a common occurrence among medieval churches that it is staggering
that it is not common knowledge. I suspect that it represents a sort of early-modern
amnesia. Certainly, through the Enlightenment and the increasingly positivistic 19th
century, the Church was concerned to "purify" itself of what were by then considered
"superstitious" practices. The result is that what *we* now think of the Middle Ages
has been bowdlerized somewhat.
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
