medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

which I find unlikely.
it is not "style" which is being copied, Tom, but "iconography".
or, if you prefer (i do), the replication of a Fundamental Architype across a
reasonably vast stretch of Culturally divergent Time.
the notion that the BVM sucked Herself out of Her own fingers is an Arrogance
as colossal as it is embarassing.
and, btw, a Blasphemy.
otOh, it might be said that identifying the BVM with the
(Hittite/Surrian/Sumerian-Akkadian) Kubaba, the Greek _Meter_ (who was
sometimes depicted enthroned with a small lion on Her lap), and, by extention,
with Rhea, Demeter, Artemis and Aphrodite, the Pergamene _Meter Megale_ and,
ultimately, the Roman Cybele, with Her (later) later "mystery" rites is to
open up a mythographer's Can of Worms into which it might be better not to
venture, at least on this quite narrowly-focused list.
there's a pretty good short article on CYBLE in the "New Pauly" which Brill is
now putting out.
