medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Offertorium – 30
Stan Metheny has besought me not to leave undescribed the processions
at York and Canterbury. These were not as elaborate as that at Sarum:
‘The first Station in the York Procession was in front of a tent on the
north side of the Minster by the Archbishop’s palace. On the way
thither the choir sang two Antiphons (Ante sex dies solemnitatis, Prima
die azymorum), to which three Responds might be added in case of
necessity [Let’s not spoil the ship for a ha’porth of tar!]. When the
Station was reached, the Antiphon Cum audisset populus was sung; and
the Deacon, attended by cross-bearer and taperers, read the Gospel
(Matt. xxi. 1-9). Meanwhile the Blessed Sacrament had been carried
thither in state under a canopy by a Priest vested in a silver cope.
The Officiant then knelt and said the Antiphon Dignus es thrice; this
was repeated by the choir also kneeling, whereupon the Sacrament was
taken back into the Minster. A sermon then followed.
‘This ended, the Procession went round the Minster to the place of the
second Station (the west door), while the Antiphons Cum appropinquaret
and Si quis vos interrogaverit were sung. Arrived at the door, the
Respond Collegerunt pontifices followed, and three priest before the
door chanted the verse Unus autem ex ipsis. Then a number of boys,
stationed above the door, sang the first four verses of the hymn Gloria
laus et honor, after each of which the choir kneeling repeated the
first verse as chorus. For a fifth verse the boys began Gloria laus et
honor again, the choir finished it, and the Procession went into the
Minster singing the Respond Ingrediente Domino.
[Wot, no cakes and flowers?]
‘The last Station was before the screen, the rood on which was
unveiled. From this point onward everything was done in much the same
manner as in the Sarum, the only noteworthy difference being that the
Versicle was Benedictus qui venit insted of Eripe me.’
Canterbury tomorrow.
Bill.
