medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (6. June) is the feast day of:
Philip the Deacon (1st century) Philip appears in the book of Acts
as one of the first seven deacons of the nascent Christian community.
He preached in Samaria, converting, among others, a eunuch in the
service of the queen of Ethiopia. According to Greek tradition, he
ended up as bishop of Tralles (Lydia). He is sometimes confused with
Philip the apostle.
Ceratius (d. c. 455) Ceratius was bishop of Grenoble. Unreliable
sources add that he was driven from Grenoble by the Arian Burgundians
and founded the see of Auch in Aquitaine.
Jarlath (d. c. 550) Jarlath was from the Galway district of Ireland.
He founded a monastery at Cluain Fois near Tuam and served there as
both abbot and bishop. He is regarded as the founder of the
archdiocese of Tuam.
Gudwal (6th cent.) Gudwal was probably from Wales or Britain and was
one of the early missionaries to Brittany. He founded the monastery
of Plecit near Locoal as well as several other monasteries. He is
now thought to be the same person as Gurval, who succeeded St. Malo
as bishop of Aleth.
Norbert of Xanten (d. 1134) Norbert was a noble whose family got him
several benefices so he was able to settle down to a very pleasant
life. But he reformed his life---when he was struck by
lightning---was ordained in 1115, and started trying to reform his
fellow canons at Xanten. This didn't work well, so he got permission
to become an itinerant preacher. Eventually he got a grant of land
at Premontre and N. and his followers built their own house of canons
regular, which of course became the mother house of the
Premonstratensian Order. N. himself continued preaching, got
involved in papal and imperial politics, and from 1133 served as
chancellor of Italy for the German emperor. N. was canonized in 1582.
