medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (28. June) is the feast day of:
Irenaeus of Lyons (d. c. 202) Irenaeus was a Greek, possibly from
the area near Smyrna in Asia Minor. He had a good education,
including study in Rome under Justin Martyr. I. moved to Gaul and
became associated with the bishop of Lyons. He missed the major bout
of persecution in Lyons because he had been sent on a mission to
Rome, and came back to become bishop. I wrote against the Gnostics
and his *Adversus Haereses* is a major apologia of Christianity. He
probably died peacefully, although a later tradition tells he was
martyred. I's feast only became general in the western church in
1922.
Paul I (d. 767) Paul succeeded his older brother Stephen II as pope,
after serving as big brother's assistant. He appears to have been a
very competent diplomat, and was also very active in tending to the
cult of the early martyrs, besides building and rebuilding several
churches.
Heimrad (d. 1019) Heimrad was an eccentric and controversial German
holy man. He was born as a serf in Swabia; his lady had him trained
as a priest and made him her chaplain, but he was soon released to go
off on several pilgrimages. He became a monk at Hersfeld for a time,
but was kicked out. H. continued wandering, and received mixed
treatment: as a pest, a lunatic, or a holy man. Eventually he
settled down as a hermit. Miracles at his tomb soon made the place a
pilgrimage center.
Sergius and Germanus of Valaam (?) S and G were Greek monks who
founded the Russian monastery of Valaam in Finland. The date is
contested, ranging from the later tenth century to a more probable
date of 1328.
