Hi folks,
Many of you will know that the UK government intends to pursue its proposal
for a national ID card. The Bill will probably be introduced in the next two
or three weeks. The scheme will involve the creation of a national
population database and the collection of biometrics (fingerprints and iris
scans) from the entire population.
I'm part of a cross-disciplinary research project at the London School of
Economics that has been tasked with determining the implications of the
scheme. We've already produced an Interim Report at
http://www.lse.ac.uk/collections/pressAndInformationOffice/PDF/IDreport.pdf
This document was extensively debated in the House of Lords before the Bill
failed prior to the May general election.
We are concerned that the implementation of a complex registration and
biometric scheme will create specific problems for people with disabilities.
The government has conducted no meaningful research on this point, nor has
the consultation process produced any useful outcome in this regard.
We therefore want to solicit the views of disabled people and the
disabilities research community about the implications of the government's
proposal. We'd be very grateful for pointers to the way forward in achieving
this. We would also like to invite interested researchers to join our team.
Best wishes
Simon Davies
