medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. April) is the feast day of:
Apollonius the Apologist (d. c. 185) A Roman senator (despite his
Greek name!), legend tells that Apollonius became a Christian but was
denounced by one of his slaves. The slave was executed as a traitor
to his master, but Apollonius was ordered to renounce his newfangled
religion. A. refused, of course (or he wouldn't be on this list),
and his case was remanded to the Senate. A. defended his faith
eloquently in that forum, but was still sentenced and beheaded.
Laserian (Molaisse) (d. 639) Laserian was a monk at Iona for several
years. Legend tells that he then went to Rome, where he was ordained
by no less a person than Gregory the Great. He then went to Ireland,
where he was a staunch supporter of Roman practices against native
Irish ones. Legend, getting even more improbable, tells that L. was
sent to Rome with a group of monks in 635 after a council trying to
solve the Roman/Celtic dispute reached an impasse; they were supposed
to get the pope to resolve the matter. While there, L. was
consecrated as bishop and sent back to Ireland as papal legate.
Idesbald (d. 1167) Idesbald was a Flemish courtier who became a
canon at Furnes and then a Cistercian monk at Dunes; in 1155 he was
elected abbot. I's cult was approved in 1894.
Galdinus (d. 1176) The Milanese Galdinus served as archdeacon of
Milan. When Archbishop Hubert had to flee the wrath of Frederick
Barbarossa (Hubert had supported the election of Pope Alexander III
in 1159 against the emperor's wishes), G. went with him into exile.
G. was named a cardinal in 1165 and succeeded Hubert as archbishop of
Milan the next year. G. helped rebuild Milan after its destruction
by Fred. Barbarossa.
