medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Pecia <[log in to unmask]>
>En Bretagne, plusieurs églises sont dédiées à Noter-Dame de la Joie
(Penmarc'h, Guimaec, Pontivy, ;;; l'abbaye Notre-Dame de la Joie à Hennebont,
une autre près de Paimpont ...)
as "coincidence" would have it we have just been discussing two French
Cistercian convents named "La Joie" on my little Chartrain discussion list.
there are short articles on them in the Dict. d'hist. & geog. eccl. (XXVII
(2000), cc. 1437-9) :
1) LA LOIE (Joye, Gaudium Beatae Mariae), diocese of Sens, near Nemours,
founded in 1231 Philip of Nemours "at the inclination of Archbishop Walter of
Sens and Louis IX".
the first two abbesses, Amelia and Jeanne I, promised obediance to the
AB of Sens, but in 1236, at the request of Queen Blanche, the chapter general
of the order of Citeaux conducted a "mission of inspection" to see what sorts
of Ordinis were being followed(?), and the convent became a "filia Cistercii"
in 1240.
Jim Bugslag found a source which suggests that "Une tradition populaire dit
que ce nom lui aurait été donné par la reine Blanche de Castille en 1242,
parce qu'elle aurait eu l'immense joie de rencontrer devant la porte de ce
couvent son fils revenu sain et sauf de son expédition de Saintonge."
but our disucssion here suggests that this tale might not have been the true
derivation of the name(?).
Queen Blanche also played a role in the early life of the 2nd convent:
2) LA JOIE-NOTRE-DAME, diocese of Soissons, Berneuil-sur-Aisne, begun as a
group of women wishing to serve lepers, installed in the leprosarium of
Berneuil by the Bishop of Soissons in 1234.
in 1240, at the request of Queen Blanche, it was officially admited into the
Cistercian order.
both houses were very small, modestly endowed and did not survive the m.a. in
their original form.
best from here,
christopher
