Marjorie,
The "main" image at Rocamadour -- and the only one I saw when I visited it a
couple of years ago -- is a rather awkwardly bony image of the Virgin and Child
enthroned and entirely blackened. On the above web-site, it can be seen in several
images, most identifiably in a lighted Gothic niche, which is located above the altar
in the Chapel of the Virgin. The Virgin and Christ Child both wear crowns. It is not
out of the question that there are, or were, other statues of the Virgin and Child
there. By the late Middle Ages, for example, Chartres Cathedral had quite a few
different statues of the Virgin and Child. Notre-Dame de Sous-Terre was apparently
the one with the most prominent miraculous reputation, but one or two others also
formed a focus of devotion and also apparently worked miracles. The relationship
between such images and the way that Marian shrines functioned is quite complex.
Someday, in a not too distant lifetime, I hope to publish something on this!
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
