medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (22. April) is the feast day of:
Epipodius and Alexander (d. 178) E and A lived in Lyons. They fled
to escape persecution, but were captured and tortured. E. was
beheaded; A. died of the torture.
Leonides of Alexandria (d. 202) Leonides was the father of Origen
and a noted scholar in his own right. He was imprisoned and executed
in the persecution that occurred during the reign of Septimius
Severus.
Agapitus I (d. 536) Agapitus was the son of a Roman priest. He
became archdeacon and was elected pope in 535 at an advanced age. He
didn't do much pontificating; much of his 11-month term of office was
spent on a mission to Constantinople on behalf of the Ostrogothic
king Theodahad. A. couldn't convince Justinian not to invade Italy,
but he did talk the emperor into deposing a monophysite patriarch.
A. died in Constantinople.
Theodore of Sykeon (d. 613) Theodore was the son of a Galatian
prostitute. He became a hermit at a young age and became a monk
while making a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. T. founded several
monasteries, one at his home town of Sykeon. T. was famed as a
prophet. He spent ten years as bishop of Anastasiopolis, but
resigned and retired to Sykeon.
