medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. April) is the feast day of:
Bademus (d. 376) The Persian abbot Bademus was imprisoned and
tortured along with seven of his monks during Shah Sapur II's
persecution. Finally, B. was murdered by a Christian apostate---who
had won his freedom by committing the deed as proof that he had
indeed renounced Christianity.
Macarius of Ghent (d. 1012) Legend tells that Macarius was
archbishop of Antioch (Pisidia) but gave all his goods to the poor
and went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. He then wandered around Europe,
winning fame as a miracle-worker. He made it as far as Ghent, where
he died in an epidemic.
Fulbert of Chartres (d. 1029) Fulbert was an Italian who studied at
Rheims. He became chancellor of Chartres and head of the cathedral
school, and in time was named bishop. F. rebuilt the cathedral and
was very influential in his day.
Paternus of Abdinghof (d. 1058) Probably an Irishman, Paternus went
to Westphalia and became a monk at the new monastery of Abdinghof.
P. went on to become a recluse there and prophesied the fire that
destroyed the place in 1058---including himself, since he refused to
break his vow of enclosure.
