We have library barcode authentication for:
Xreferplus
Oxford Online
Oxford DNB
Infotrac newspapers
They all using lists of our barcodes to check against, actually usually
ranges of numbers, and of a certain length. E.g. 14 digits long starting
with XXXXXXXX.....)
These are stored by the suppliers at Oxford and Xrereferplus. Of these
Oxford's is better because it can be used from their web page directly.
Xrefeplus's has to link first from our web pages. This is because we cannot
guarantee that our numbers are unique compared to other local authorities
(ex-Berks)
For Infotrac, I think we keep the list.
Like Cambridge (Hi Robert) we are considering remote patron authentication,
but do not yet use it. I imagine it is like a proxy server.
Here is a presentation about the basic ways remote authentication can be
done, from a talk arranged by Xreferplus in 2002:

Subject: remote access to digital resources
We have purchased a number of online resources such as Britannica, DNB etc
which we wish to make available to our users from home as well as from our
libraries. Has anyone successfully set this up? if so how did you go about
it?
Thanks
