medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (5. March) is the feast day of:
Eusebius of Cremona (d. c. 423) Eusebius was a native of Cremona who
became part of Jerome's entourage when J. moved to the Holy Land.
The whole crew settled at Bethlehem. E. eventually went back to
Italy to raise funds for a pilgrim hostel in Jerusalem. While in
Rome, he got in a dispute with Rufinus, who claimed that E. had
stolen his translation of the writings of Origen. E. appears to have
remained in Italy the rest of his life.
Gerasimus (d. 475) Gerasimus was a merchant of Lycia in Asia Minor.
He went to Palestine a founded a monastic community near Jericho. G.
was famous for austerity and death-defying asceticism.
Kieran of Saighir (d. c. 530) Kieran the Elder (to distinguish him
from Kieran of Clonmacnois) was an Irish saint known to us, as is the
case with so many of these early Irish folks, almost exclusively from
late and untrustworthy legend. He is supposed to have gone to Rome
at the age of 30 and was consecrated bishop either there or according
to another account back in Ireland by St. Patrick. K. was a hermit
for a while and built a monastery for his disciples, which developed
into the town of Saighir. He's considered the first bishop of
Ossory. My favorite legend of K tells that his first monks were
animals---a boar, a badger, a wolf, and a fox. The fox, in a fit of
apostasy, stole K's shoes and ate them. The poor beast had to do
penance for his lapse.
Drausinus (d. c. 674) Drausinus was a bishop of Soissons, who stands
out in the annals of early Francia for actually getting the tyrannous
mayor of the palace Ebroin to do something for the church besides
providing lots of martyrs---E. founded a chapel at D's request.
Medieval legend held that spending the night at D's tomb would make a
person invincible, so large crowds of soldiers used to camp out there
before battles. D. was also reputed to protect people from their
enemies' plans---Thomas Becket made a pilgrimage to the shrine before
returning to England (maybe Drausinus was too busy with soldiers that
day to pay attention).
