medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (4. March) is the feast day of:
Leonard of Avranches (d. c. 614) Leonard was bishop of Avranches for
30 years, completely reforming his character from bullying and firey
to kind and helpful.
Adrian of May (d. c. 875) Adrian, who may have been an Irishman, was
a missionary on the isle of May in the Firth of Forth (Scotland). He
and several other missionaries were killed by viking raiders.
Somehow the legend developed later that A. was a Hungarian prince.
Peter of Cava (d. 1123) Peter Pappacarbone was a native of Salerno
who became a monk at Cava. He spent some years at Cluny, and on his
return to Italy was appointed bishop of Policastro. But he resigned
his bishopric and returned to Cava. The monks elected him abbot, but
then complained at his strictness, so he left---only to be recalled
by the Cava monks again. Peter introduced Cluniac practices at Cava
and attracted many monks and donations.
Casimir of Poland (d. 1484) Casimir was the third child of Casimir
IV of Poland and Elizabeth of Austria. He was pious, refusing to
lead armies if he thought the cause was unjust, refusing to marry,
and spending his time with study and prayer. He died on a visit to
Lithuania at the age of 26. Many miracles were reported at his tomb
at Vilna and he was canoized in 1522. C. is patron saint of Poland
and Lithuania.
