medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Enda (d. c. 530)... He and St. Finnian of Clonard are
regarded as the founders of monasticism in Ireland.
Dear Phyllis
I have not come across the above claim in my research and would love to
know the source. Could you let me know where this information comes
from? Thank you.

culture
Today (21. March) is the feast day of:
Serapion (d. c. 370) Serapion was head of the catechetical school at
Alexandria, but gave it all up to become a hermit. He was brought
from his hermitage to become bishop of Thmuis in Lower Egypt. S. was
a vigorous opponent of Arianism and Manichaeism; he was exiled by
Constantius II for his anti-Arian stand and probably died in exile.
Enda (d. c. 530) The subject of some rather anachronistic-sounding
legends, Enda was an Irish warrior who gave up on secular life when
his fiancee died. He is supposed to have gone on a pilgrimage to
Rome, where he was ordained (this seems to be standard in legends of
early Irish saints), then came back to Ireland to enjoy a satisfying
career as a monastic founder. He and St. Finnian of Clonard are
regarded as the founders of monasticism in Ireland.
Nicholas of Flue (d. 1487) Nicholas was a peasant, soldier, and
father of ten children. He gave it all up and became a hermit in
1467. N. was famous for his holy life and reputed to live
exclusively on the eucharistic elements. Nicholas is considered by
many to be the father of Switzerland for his role in mediating to
prevent a threatened civil war and thus aiding the unification of the
Swiss. He was canonized in 1947.
