Er, Phyllis, what is your source for the "and companions"? I haven't
found that in any early martyrology or calendar (not that my searching
has been exhaustive, of course) and wonder if it hasn't crept in from
Stephen of Narbonne and companions (28. May). As for "sticky end", our
earliest sources, Prudentius and Gregory of Tours, say explicitly that
P. did not undergo martyrdom. P. is said to have been buried at a spot
over which arose Narbonne's church dedicated to him; remains identified
as his are said to have been burned during the French revolution (so
perhaps a crispy rather than a sticky end).
