medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I am an independent scholar, with a MA in Medieval Studies, and I recently had my book "The Deaths of the Popes: Comprehensive Accounts Including Funerals, Burial Places, and Epitaphs" published in Oct. 2004 by McFarland Publishers.
At the Kalamazoo Conference in 2001 I went to the McFarland booth and they had a sign that said "Tell us your book idea" so I did, that I wanted to do a book that dealt ONLY with the deaths of popes. The woman there (who later became my editor) thought it was a good idea and asked for some sample entries. I sent them to her, they made changes, and sent me a contract.
My book was more of a general interest and although the topic is specific, it's got every epitaph translated into English, pictures of most existing papal tombs, and the history of papal tombs and funerals, etc. so it appeals to a broad range of people, which I think worked in my favor.
That process is the one thing in my life that actually seemed somewhat 'easy' and believe me, I thank God for that every day, so I don't take that for granted at all because I know there are other scholars out there struggling to get their passions published as well.
Good Luck,
Wendy Reardon
