medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (24. February) is the feast day of:
Lucius and companions (d. 259) In 259 a revolt broke out in
Carthage, and the Roman governor blamed it on the Christians. He
arrested eight men, followers of the martyred Cyprian, and executed
them.
Praetextatus (d. 586) Praetextatus (or Prix) became bishop of Rouen
in 549 and held the office 35 years. He got involved in Merovingian
power politics, especially falling foul of Fredegunde. She
engineered P's exile. He was later permitted to return by King
Guntram of Burgundy, but an assassin sent by Fredegunde stabbed him
to death in his own church.
John Theristus (d. 1129) John's mother had been captured in a raid
and enslaved in Sicily, where J. was born. He escaped at the age of
14 and went back to his mother's Calabrian homeland, where he became
a monk. He got his nickname (Theristus = "harvester") because he
miraculously brought in a large harvest before a storm broke.
