medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I would suggest starting with the work of Brian Tierney. I first
encountered the idea that development of democracy owed much to the
religious orders in his work. Here are two of his works in this area.
Church law and constitutional thought in the Middle Ages, London :
Variorum Reprints, 1979
Religion, law, and the growth of constitutional thought, 1150-1650,
Cambridge [Cambridgeshire] ; New York : Cambridge University Press,
1982.
