medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
no problem meg -- and I really think that the
intention of an internet discussion list is to be
speculative and I don't send my posts out for proof
before hand but you didn't mean to send yours to the
list and I know how that feels! So no offense taken
whatsoever and I think you make some great points.
Your inadvertent post brings ups some interesting
issues, in particular the mention of "hagiography."
First of all, I think John would agree that the a
general modern dictionary cannot provide an adequate
definition of "secular" for today or the M.A. that
touches on the cultural impact of it or actual usuage
and understanding of it in a given idiolect (the one I
am interested in being that of medieval literaty
scholarship)-- anymore than it could provide a
defintion of "liberal".
If I wasn't clear the last time, hagiographic, is
really far more overt than what I'm trying to get at
but it reminds me that it is part of the problem,
especially on the part of some who tend towards crude
reductions of a number of the discursive issues
involved. ('Perceval/Parzival is nothing more than
'Vita Christi' and other such nonsense.) And that
brings up a point -- I really want to foucs on 12th
and 13th century epic. (ergo this example and the ones
in the last post -- and yes the Icelandic Family
History Blogs would be included! -- if we can't have a
little fun in cyberspace then it loses its appeal.)
The reason why I used the term "exegisis" is because
textual meaning is determined by reception and how can
we talk about a secular medieval epic, if we don't
have much evidence that it were being read outside of
thoroughly religious means of explication -- even if
that information comes largely from in text authorial
allusions to other works. In any case, this would mean
sorting out hagiographic and soteriological. (I would
just say that the former is incidental and the latter
structural.) I hope that was more careful with the
terms -- as far as any typos go . . . well that's
incurable I fear.
