medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (20. February) is the feast day of:
Tyrannio, Zenobius, and companions (d. 310) I don't know why kids
don't get cool names like "Tyrannio" any more. This specimen was
bishop of Tyre, arrested as a Christian in 310 and taken to Antioch
along with the priest Zenobius of Sidon. T. was tortured and then
drowned in the Orantes; Zenobius died while being racked.
Sadoth (d. c. 342) Sadoth was a deacon of Seleucia-Ctesiphon before
becoming bishop in the midst of Sapur II's persecution (his
predecessor having been martyred). S. went into hiding for a while,
but was arrested when Sapur himself came to Seleucia. He and a large
number of other Christians were tortured repeatedly over a five month
period, after which Sadoth was beheaded.
Eleutherius of Tournai (d. 532) Eleutherius became bishop of Tournai
in 486. He was a very powerful preacher and converted both
non-Christians and Arians. The Arians were so offended that a group
of them attacked E. and beat him so badly that he died five weeks
later.
Eucherius of Orleans (d. 743) Eucherius was a native of Orleans,
became a monk at Jumieges, and returned to Orleans as bishop in c.
721. He soon ran into conflict with Charles Martel who had a habit
of confiscating ecclesiastical revenues. Charles exiled E. to
Cologne, but he got too popular there, so he was first moved to Liege
and then allowed to retire to the monastery of St. Trond.
Wulfric (d. 1154) The English Wulfric was a wastrel in his youth but
overcompensated by becoming a recluse in a cell next to the church of
Haselbury (Somerset) and being extremely ascetic the rest of his
life. He was famous for prophecy and miracles. His tomb was popular
with pilgrims until the Reformation.
