medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
9. January is the feast day of:
Marciana (d. c. 303) Marciana lived in what is now Mauretania.
She's another of the spectacular virgins of the Great Persecution:
her virginity was miraculously preserved when she was sentenced to be
raped by a bunch of lascivious gladiators, after which she was killed
by a wild bull and a leopard.
Peter of Sebaste (d. 391) Peter was a member of a very, very saintly
family: his parents were Sts. Emmelia and Basil the Elder; his
siblings included Sts. Basil, Gregory of Nyssa, and Macrina. P.
became a monk in Armenia and abbot in time. He became bishop of
Sebaste in 380, fought Arians, etc.
Adrian of Canterbury (d. 710) Adrian was an African who became abbot
of a monastery at Nerida near Naples. He refused to be made
archbishop of Canterbury, but still was willing to go with the new
archbishop (Theodore of Tarsus) up to the cold and misty north. He
became abbot of SS. Peter and Paul in Canterbury, where he served for
39 years, making his monastery a great center of learning.
