medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I've just been reading the TMR review of Claire Waters' _Angels and
Earthly Creatures_ and was struck by my ignorance of a point brought
up: Hildegard of Bingen, Birgitta of Sweden, and Catherine of Siena
are described as both "would-be women preachers" and "female
preachers." But I really don't know--did these women actually preach
(as opposed to teach, talk, etc.)? I am also a bit leery because of
that shift in description from "would-be" to actual, but it's not
clear if the shift occurs in the book or just the review, and even if
"would-be" means Hildegard, Birgitta, and Catherine wanted to be or if
the critic wanted them to be.
