Hi Folks,
I've been casually pondering "geo-military" influence questions
lately, and the question occurred to me: How many countries have
any serious number of military bases in other people's countries?
I know the UK has a few (especially in Germany).
The US is the big one, so I started there.
The first lead I got was on US Air Bases, from the URL
http://www.globemaster.de/cgi-bin/bases/
db.cgi?db=default&uid=default&view_records=1&Base=*&nh=1
(all one line). It takes a few minutes to work through the
succession of 99 pages which this will throw up, but the outcome
was that the US (according to this list) has a total of 494 Air
Bases, of which 370 are in the USA and the remaining 124 in
40 different other countries. The details -- which you may find
interesting and maybe even sometimes a bit unexpected -- are as
follows:
Afghanistan: 4
Australia: 2
Bahamas: 2
Belgium: 1
BIOT: 2
Bosnia-Herzegowina: 1
Cuba: 1
Cyprus: 1
Denmark: 1
Ecuador: 1
France: 1
Germany: 22
Greece: 1
Guam: 3
Honduras: 1
Hungary: 1
Iceland: 1
Iraq: 1
Italy: 6
Japan: 9
Korea: 14
Kuwait: 4
Kyrgyzstan: 1
Macedonia: 3
Marshall Islands: 2
Netherlands: 1
Norway: 2
Panama: 2
Philippines: 3
Portugal: 2
Puerto Rico: 3
Qatar: 1
Saudi Arabia: 5
Singapore: 1
Spain: 3
Taiwan: 1
Turkey: 2
United Arab Emirates: 1
United Kingdom: 10
USA: 370
Uzbekistan: 1
Most of these -- if not all (apart from USA) -- are countries
over which the USA has no territorial jurisdiction.
And that's just Air Bases. I've yet to get data on Navy and Army
Bases.
Now I'd like to look at similar data for other countries!
This may be a bit off-topic for our list (though I'm not sure
about that), but I did think that some of us might be in touch
with this sort of question. Can anyone come up with good pointers?
Best wishes to all,
Ted.
PS As well as the time it takes to cut&paste from the aforesaid
99 pages, if you are thinking of emulating this exercise I'd
point out that without Unix-type file-processing tools it
would take a lot longer to extract details such as the above!
Who has what, and where?
