Dear Rose,
At the University of Newcastle in Australia, we have University wide
compulsory use of a plagiarism detection software. However, we use it
primarliy as an educational tool rather than a detection tool. Students
are encouraged to view their own reports and make corrections as many
times as they wish prior to final submission of an assignment. Final
submissions are usually in hard copy as well as directly to Turnitin.
This not only encourages students to improve their work and knowledge
but greatly lowers the work for assessors. In large classes, the course
coordinator emails the Turnitin reports to the assessors for checking.
If there is plagiarism/collusion/recycling (which often means the
student is 'sad' rather then 'bad', the assessors then refer the case to
a Student Academic Conduct Officer (similar to Oxford Brookes system)
who either provides a penalty but in most cases ensure remedial studies.
Students are supported by an Infoskills website, a learning skills
centre and in class explanations by lecturers.

Subject: Logistics of large courses
We at Harper Adams University College undertook to pilot the JISC
Plagiarism Detection Service on our Masters Courses, which is a
small manageable group. This has been successful and we now
intend expanding the PDS onto our undergraduate courses.
I would like your views and experiences on the handling of large
courses and the logistics involved.
More specifically we are interested in the best manageable format
for students to submit their coursework either electronically or on
CD's disk. Currently the Masters student submitted a hard copy
plus email to a dedicated email address.
Also what percentage would you random sample? We are also
considering selecting a random sample of the group for testing and
would be interested in your views on this as well.
Many thanks
Rose
