Dear Colleagues,
Some American chaps over at Cornell University have made the following
request. I am fairly sure someone on our list will have some ideas.
Best Regards
Vernon

I am writing to you in the hope that one of you might be able to help me
locate UK data I need to undertake a study of obesity and labor market
outcomes. A couple of colleagues here (Richard Burkhauser and John
Cawley) are preparing a grant proposal to study whether obesity is
leading to an increase in labor
Market related disability.
We are hoping to make one part of our study a cross-national comparison
using data from the UK (the BHPS), Germany (GSOEP) and the US (PSID).
One of the innovations we are proposing is to use a different measure of
obesity than the one (body mass index) that is typically used in the
study of obesity. In particular, we will use a measure of fat free body
mass. In the US we can do this data from the NHANES III (National
Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) - that includes measures of fat
free mass taken with bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). The NHANES
has both BMI and BIA measures so we will be able to look at how well BMI
predicts BIA (together with other socio-economic chacteristics).
We are trying to locate a data set from the UK that:
1. has both BMI and BIA
2. samples a large representative cross-section of the UK population,
and
3. includes a rich set of measures of socio economic characteristics
We can, if necessary, also use coefficients estimated from small samples
drawn for particular studies (such as narrowly targeted medical studies)
as
long as:
a) the samples are representative of the UK population and
b) the data include total body fat (fat free mass), BMI, and demographic
characteristics such as age, sex, ethnicity
We would also be quite happy to just get coefficient estimates from a
regression of BIA (total body fat/fat free mass) on BMI and whatever
demographic variables that are available.
Are you aware of any data that includes all of these things?
If you do or know where I might look I would be grateful.
Best regards,
Dean Lillard
PS We are also looking for such data for German samples. If you know
of a German data set that has them we would appreciate learning about
them.
