Subject: sussex global political economy conference
Dear Colleague,
We would be very grateful if you could forward this mail as widely as
possible.
Between May 26-28, 2005, Sussex University is hosting an international
conference to investigate the socio-political contours of global
finance in the wake of the changes in the competitive and regulatory
landscape over the last few decades.
The explicit aim of the conference is to wrest the apparently opaque
debate on efficiency and efficacy from the grip of practicioners and
their apologists, and instead construct a social appreciation of
finance as political and historical phenomenon. Speakers have been
invited and papers selected on the basis of their capacity to
illuminate finance where it matters most, in its mutual connections
with socio-political organisation. That is finance in the everyday and
outside the markets.
Invited speakers include; Donald McKenzie, Karel Williams, Gerard
Dumenil, Ilene Grabel, Jonathan Nitzan, Robert Wade, Jan Aart Scholte
and Chris Sanders.
The conference has attracted a highly international and
interdisciplinary participation. Panels address pension 'crises',
personal debt, development credit, accountancy, new instruments, market
dynamics, gender, regulation, culture, governments, governance and
development.
Sussex University's Centre for Global Political Economy calls for the
widest possible participation in the conference and invites your
contribution in probing the contours of the actual and the limits of
the possible in an ever more financial 'reality'.
Details for the event can be found at the centre's website. Contact Dr
Libby Assassi at the Centre for Global Political Economy for further
particulars. We look forward to welcoming you at Sussex.
Yours faithfully,
