FYI France: the riots, resources digital & other
A few resources, on the recent riots in France... Much has been "said" and "reported", but only now are more considered and dispassionate analyses emerging from all of that. It's always interesting, too, to read what was said "just before" the event.
The possibility of these riots has been discussed for a long
time: from Godard filming out at Sarcelles in the 1960s, to decades of immigration-debate, to the built-up layers of graffiti on Paris walls. Now finally it has happened: not the worst, which might have, but bad enough. Time for recap & reconsideration, then.
It will happen again. And elsewhere than just in France, as well:
this week in Australia, and in the US tensions are building -- it's a problem we all share. Libraries have been centrally involved:
among the casualties, and among the greatest hopes for a solution.

-- which provides links and other information. Many of these are mounting special exhibits and activities now. Digital library efforts might help, in both directions: both to let France know that the rest of the world cares, and to let the rest of the world know "what's coming"... we _all_ could use refreshers in race relations, and urban growth problems, and minority questions & rights, and in Globalization's new labor mobility demands (for the latter see, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saskia_Sassen).
