medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The penitentials were meant to help priests in questioning penitents
privately. They seem to have been used very widely in the 8th and 9th
centuries, although there was opposition to their use from some of the
hierarchy. Public confession may have been the de iure norm, but the
practice de facto was very often private confession.
