medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Churches housing relics are called martyria in early Christian
architecture. Other churches such as cathedrals in the early Christian
period did not possess relics. Later, in medieval Byzantium, cathedrals
housed them (e.g., many were preserved in Hagia Sophia in
Constantinople, as Russian pilgrims attest).

How about the notion that a basilica is a church built specifically to
house a relic? I have this in the back of my mind and wonder if I
dreamed it up or if it has some validity. In other words, "basilica" may
refer to form or function.
