medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (3. December) is the feast day of:
Lucius (2nd cent.?) A person of very dubious existence, a section of
the Liber Pontificalis written in c. 530 tells that Lucius was a
British ruler who wrote to the pope asking for baptism and
missionaries.
Claudius, Hilaria, and companions (d. 283) Claudius was a Roman
tribune, Hilaria his wife. They were so impressed by the martyrdom
of Chrysanthus that they converted to Christianity, along with 70 of
Claudius' soldiers. C. was killed by being thrown into a river with
a rock tied to his neck; the others were all executed, except for
Hilaria, who died in prison.
Cassian of Tangiers (d. c. 298) Cassian was a court stenographer who
was on the job at the trial of St. Marcellus the Centurion. C.
denounced the death penalty imposed as unjust and declared himself a
Christian. So he was imprisoned, and soon after put to death. He's
the patron saint of stenographers.
Sola (d. 794) Sola was an English monk, a disciple of St. Boniface.
S. became a hermit at Fulda and then near Eichstatt. The monastery
of Solnhofen grew out of his hermitage.
a barely modern saint: Francis Xavier (d. 1552) Francis Xavier was
from the Basque area of Spanish Navarre. While studying in Paris he
met Ignatius Loyola and became one of the first seven Jesuits in
1534. In 1540 he set out for the East. And became one of the most
successful missionaries in world history. FX worked in India,
Malacca, the Moluccas, Morotai, and Japan; he set out for China in
1552 but died before he got there. He is estimated to have converted
100s of 1000s of people and is hailed both as the "apostle of the
Indies" and as "apostle of Japan." FX was canonized in 1622.
