To add a voice from the early 12th c.: asked about mutual confession
among monks, Ivo of Chartres held that for peccata leviora this was
sufficient, but for graviora, absolution by a priest was necessary:
"De mutua confessione, de qua dicit apostolus Jacobus: Confitemini
alterutrum peccata vestra (Jac. v), hoc respondeo, quia sufficit pro
quotidianis et levibus peccatis si congrua sequatur satisfactio. Si vero
graves sint culpae, ab eo cui data est potestas ligandi atque solvendi,
quaerenda est absolutio." (PL 162, 190A)
What do we know about early 11th c. positions on this?
