medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
For the libraries of the popes at Avignon, see the brief treatment by
Bernard Guillemain, La Cour Pontificale d'Avignon (Paris, 1966), pp. 126-8,
and the sources he cites, including the inventories edited by Herman Hoberg.
I'm sorry that I don't have access to these at present to check them for
you.
Best wishes

Subject: [M-R] prophetic culture at Avignon
medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Can anyone tell me where I might find out more about the the presence of
prophetic texts, or the cultural importance of prophecy, at the papal court
at Avignon?
In her recent book about Cola di Rienzo, Amanda Collins argues that there
was at the Avignon court "an atmosphere of apocalypticized political
tension." And she cites Cola's letter to Emperor Charles IV referring to
the presence of manuscripts of prophetic texts in libraries in
Avignon: "If the prophecies of Merlin, of Methodius, of Polycarpos, of
Joachim, and of Cyril are inspired by the evil spirit or are merely
stories, why, then, do the pastors and prelates of the church keep them, so
willingly, in beautiful copies bound in silver, among the contents of their
libraries?"
Is anything more known about these libraries?
Thanks,
Tom
