medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear members,
I am working on the library catalogues of the Earl of Kildare, the
pre-eminent figure in Anglo-Irish politics in late medieval and early modern
Ireland. It survives in two slightly differing versions, the earliest dating
to 1526. Between them they record 120 works in English, French, Latin and
Irish.
It contains some interesting religious material including scriptural
commentaries by Nicholas of Lyra and Hugh of Vienne; hagiographical material
(Le Legent de towtes sainctes, various saints' lives in Irish) and
contemporary material (The kyng of Englond his answere to Lutter and Sir
Thomas Moore agaynis the new ideas that hold agayns pilgremages)
Most of the texts I have been able to identify without too much difficulty
using Sharpe's List of Identifications and the British Library Catalogue,
but have come unstuck on the following, which I give as listed in the
catalogue:
Latin
Tria volumina operas sancti Anthonini (Antoninus of Florence?)
Opus Cornelii Vitelli poete
De diversitate avium (or 'anime' in the late version)
Caliopinus
Ortus vocabulorum et medulla gramatici
Hympni Andree poete
French
Anguiran 2 volumis
Lez illustracions de Gaule & singularites de Troy
Lalace d'amore devine; le brevier des nobles, Le catir choses en ung volume
(le quatre choses in the later version)
Oraste le ii volume
Irish
The speech of Oyncheaghis
Foilfylmey
Any assistance will be gratefully received and duly acknowledged.
With thanks in advance
