medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The canon law texts rarely use "dedication," & it seems to be
interchangeable with "consecration." The distinction I see is between
reconsecration & lesser measures when a church is renovated or defiled.
The English translation of Hugh of St. Victor, On the sacraments (Bk II
pt. 5) has 3 chapters on the dedication of a church. Hugh compares the
right to baptism, including the use of water & salt (Plus other things)
in the ceremony.

I'm curious--why do they need to be out of debt first? Isn't the
commitment to holiness and God's work the same whether or not there is
a
mortgage? And is there a difference between dedication and
consecration?
