medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture on behalf of Ann

> The Non=scholarly, but the best story I have on St. Michael in Southern
Italy is that once during a drought the people were angered that he didn't
make it rain so they ripped the wings off his statue and hung him upside down
in a well to punish him. Apparently the saint were truly part of the family
in this period of time. :)

> Great story - is it written anywhere, or is this part of oral tradition?
sounds like an example of "Humiliation [or Coercion] of Saints", a
not-uncommon phenomenon, apparently.
though it seems that this one took place outside of the context of a religious
establishment.

Geary notes (p. 96, n.3) that DuCange collected some examples of the
humiliation of relics in his _Glossarium_, VII, cc. 112-13 [this may be one of
the volumes available on line on the http://gallica.bnf.fr site].
