medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
May I once again draw on the collective learned panel with a question:
Many calendars written in Rouen has on Sept. 23, a 'Saint paer' -
obviously a dialectal pronounciation. Since no clear candidate is
known to me, has the problem been postponed without any serious
research done. Usuard has on the day a 'Paternus episcopus',
an addition to the martyrology has a Paxentius martyr, found in a
french calendar as 'Saint paxaut'. Could anybody please tell me if
one of these two can end up as 'Paer' in Normandy? (Neighter of them
has been incorporated in Phyllis postings).
For some time did I consider a possible derivation of Paer from
the Latin 'puer' (Just of Beauvais was called 'Justus puer', cf.:
Saints of the day 18. October), but the date is dubious. He was
also placed on 18. October in the 15th C.)
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Erik
