Today (2. September) is the feast day of:
Antoninus of Apamea (4th cent.) An eastern legend tells that
Antoninus was a stonemason of Aribazus in Syria. He denounced his
fellow villagers for their idolatry, went off and became a hermit,
then returned and destroyed the cult statues. When driven out by the
irate villagers he went on to Apamea. He built a church there, so
enraging his new neighbors that they murdered him.
Castor (d. c. 425) Castor was a native of Nimes. He and his wife
decided to separate and enter the religious life. C. went on to
found the monastery of Monanque neart Apt, becoming its first abbot.
Soon he became bishop of Apt.
Agricolus (d. c. 700) Agricolus became a monk at Lerins after his
wife died, and was consecrated as bishop of Avignon after serving as
coadjutor there for his father Bishop Magnus. A. was famous for his
preaching and care for the poor. He was named patron of Avignon in
1647.
William of Roskilde (d. 1070) William was an Anglo-Saxon priest who
became chaplain to King Cnut. He went with the king on a visit to
Denmark and decided to stay and evangelize, becoming bishop of
Roskilde.
Brocard (d. c. 1231) Brocard (aka Burchard) was a French monk who
joined the eremitical community on Mt. Carmel, becoming their
superior.
A bunch of modern saints: The martyrs of September (blessed) (d.
1792) 191 religious (an archbishop, several bishops, monks, nuns,
friars, priests) who refused to take an oath accepting the civil
constitution of the clergy that had been imposed by the French
revolutionary assembly. They were imprisoned in the Carmelite
monastery in Paris, and on 2-3 September were massacred by a mob.
They were beatified in 1926.
