medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (26. September) is the feast day of:
Cosmas and Damian (d. 303) Legend tells that Cosmas and Damian were
Arabian twins. They studied medicine and then settled down in
Cilicia to practice their skills without charge. They wre tortured
and beheaded in Diocletian's persecution.
Colman of Lann Elo (d. 611) Colman was deeply influenced by his
uncle, St. Colum Cille. In c. 590 he built the monastery of Lann Elo
(Lynally) at Offaly, later going on to found Muckamore and to serve
as bishop of Connor.
John of Meda (d. c. 1159) John was from Como (Italy). He joined the
Humiliati, adapting the Benedictine Rule to suit the new order's
needs. He was canonized by Alexander III.
Nilus of Rossano (d. 1004) Also known as Nilus the Younger, N. was
born to Greek parents at Rossano (Calabria). He had a secular life
until age thirty, when his mistress and their child died. Then he
became a Basilian monk. He won a very wide reputation for holiness,
serving as abbot at several monasteries in the course of his
extremely long life, and helping with the planning for the monastery
of Grotta Ferrata shortly before his death.
A modern saint: Therese Couderc (d. 1885) The French Therese Couderc
joined a teaching community in the Alps and went on to run a hospital
for women. This was the beginning of the Daughters of St. Regis in
1829, which went on to hold retreats for laywomen---which in time
became TC's central work. She ended up founding the Congregation of
Our Lady of the Retreat in the Cenacle. Financial difficulties led
to TC's resignation as head of the community. She was canonized in
1970.
