> Under the headline "Did Gipper's ghost help dig up the echoes? Was team
> saved from defeat by dirt from ND hero's grave site?", it appears on the
> front page of yesterday's "South Bend Tribune," my local newspaper (which

>
> During last weekend's football game between the University of Notre Dame
> and its rival the University of Michigan, the alumni chaplain of the ND
> marching band sprinkled dirt from the grave of legendary 1920s ND player
> "the Gipper" and holy water in the ND end zone. Notre Dame won the game

> blessed."

Well, let's stray a bit further: one of my fellow change ringers here in
Charleston is a graduate of UM. She was upset about the upset since the
ND coach (IIRC) was slated to be UM coach, but it fell through at the last
minute. UM being one of the power-houses in the eleven "Big Ten" colleges
has always had a close competition with their across-the-border rival ND,
which is still and independent college, I think. Leave it to some crazy
Irish priests to do some sort of "cultish" thing for the sake of a game!
I'm 1/2 Irish + 1/2 German cradle Catholic, and I would not consider
sending any of my kids to ND for a "Catholic" education. Shall we develop
a "tontine" to be collected by a future generation when football enters
the realm of medieval history alongside jousting?
