off topic, but i can't resist this shot in the dark.
several (four?) years ago, in the publisher's exhibits at K'zoo i saw a new
book which was devoted to Byzantine painted and mosaic column decorations of
this sort :
http://www.dartmouth.edu/~classics/rome2003/updates/week3_4/1016saler11Web.JPG
it looked like a quite well done study, with lots of nice pickies of things i
had never seen before.
the multiplicity of examples of similar column decorations on "romanesque"
portals (and in metalwork) in the West surely spring from this Byzantine
tradition.
of course, i neglected to note the title, author or publisher and have been
unable to find the book elsewhere.
i don't suppose anyone on this list happens to have seen suchlike an item?
best,
christopher
