medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Anna, I'm not sure this fits, but let's give it a try. Ercole I
d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, 1471-1505, was one of the greatest supporters
of theatre during the renaissance; he and his daughter Isabella and
daughter-in-law Lucrezia Borgia/d'Este were the real creators of
Renaissance Theatre. Now, the duke used theatrical performance cum
religious ritual to create a unique relationship between himself and
his own people, and as a diplomatic device. So: I AM ERCOLE, DUKE OF
FERRARA! Does that sound feasable. Or, I could do the wedding
celebrations for Lucrezia: I AM LUCREZIA, DUCHESS APPARENT OF FERRARA!
However, Lucrezia married Alfonso I (heir to Ercole) in 1502 so that
really falls into the early Renaissance. Does this fit into the
notion of identity well enough to do a paper? Incidentally, I did a
paper in the last session on the Passion of Christ done by the duke in
Ferrara. Please see the attachment for the blurb.
