medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
so, let me see if i've got this straight: there were two
nearly-contemporary
Toms de Vio, both known as Cajetan,
Not quite, Crockers. St Cajetan was not Thomas de Vio. That association
is the brilliant but quite erroneous guess of our eminent hagiologist,
Marjorie Green. St Cajetan's real name was Cajetan, and he was known as
Cajetan. No confusion there surely. On the other hand, one Thomas de
Vio went by the name of Cajetan, which was not his real name; he was
just being awkward. This was probably why they never made him a saint,
though they could not stop him publishing his tome on the Summa. Let me
make it as clear as possible:
St Cajetan, from Vicenza, was a saint, not a theologian.
Thomas de Vio, from Gaeta, was a theologian, not a saint.
If matters had rested there, there would have been no possible
confusion. But the silly bounder insisted on calling himself "Cajetan"
which apparently, apart from being the name of a saint, means "from
Gaeta."
I hope all confusion is now banished.
Bill.
