medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (4. August) is the feast day of:
Ia and companions (d. c. 360) A rather shaky tradition tells that Ia was a Greek, apparently a slave, who had considerable success converting Persian ladies to Christianity. She was arrested in Sapur II's persecution, tortured for months to try to get her to renounce her faith, then flogged to death.
Molua (or Lughaidh) (d. 608) Molua (an affection form of "Lughaidh"—the "Mo" means "my") was a cowherd in his youth, then became a monk at Bangor. He founded a number of monasteries, most notably Clonfertmulloe.
A modern saint: Jean-Baptist Vianney (d. 1859) Vianney decided to become a priest at age 20. He had a hard time with his studies, but was finally ordained because his examiners thought he was good enough to compensate for lack of learning. In 181 he was appointed curé of Ars, where he spent the rest of his life transforming the religious life of his parishioners. He became famous as a spiritual director, often spending 16-18 hours a day in the confessional. Vianney was canonized in 1925 and named patron of parish priests in 1929.
